Kovai Purple Cabbage Roti

Purple cabbage, also known as red cabbage, is a nutrient-dense vegetable. It contains comparatively more nutrients and fewer calories and this makes it an ideal vegetable for people aiming for weight loss.

This red vegetable is a powerhouse of dietary fibres, good quality carbohydrates, potassium, plenty of vitamins and other essential minerals. The dark pigment of the cabbage indicates a higher level of antioxidants, which are known to reduce oxidative stress.

Purple cabbage is low in calories and high in dietary fibre. Thus, it effectively aids in the digestion process. Eating cooked cabbage can prevent stomach ailments such as indigestion and constipation.

Kovai purple cabbage roti is a simple yet tasty, healthy and nutritious dish to make at home any time of the day. It contains many vegetables mixed with wheat flour, and this makes it a good dinner choice. The dough for this recipe could be made ahead and kept in the fridge.

Ingredients:

  • Wheat flour (godhumai maavu) – 1 cup
  • Purple cabbage, grated – 1/2 cup
  • Carrot, grated – 1/2 cup
  • Onion, finely chopped – 1
  • Green chilli, finely chopped – 1
  • Ginger, finely chopped – 1 tbsp.
  • Coriander leaves, finely chopped – 1/4 cup
  • Curry leaves, finely chopped – a few
  • Cumin seeds – 1 tsp.
  • Curd (yogurt) – ¼ cup
  • Ghee – 1 tbsp.
  • Salt to taste
  • Water

Method:

  • In a bowl, add all the ingredients listed and mix to a chapathi dough consistency.
  • Heat an iron dosa tawa.
  • Take a small amount of dough and gently spread the dough on a banana leaf/plate to a round shape.
  • Cook on both sides.
  • Use ghee while cooking.
  • Serve hot with either curds, pickle or any chutney.
