Kauvery Hospital, Salem successfully administers Minimally Invasive-CABG procedure for a patient with LAD Artery blockage
29th July 2024: Kauvery Hospital, Salem, which is part of a leading multi-specialty healthcare chain in Tamil Nadu, has always been at the forefront of medical treatment, technology and services.
The left anterior descending (LAD) artery is the largest coronary artery, which carries oxygenated blood to the left side of our heart. Sometimes plaque can build up inside the artery, causing blockage called “coronary artery disease”. This could lead to a Heart Attack.
There was the case of a patient from Pondicherry who had suffered a heart attack and was immediately admitted to a Hospital in Pondicherry. An angiogram was done, where it was found that one vessel had a 100% (complete) block and angioplasty or surgery was recommended. However, a relative of his, who is an anaesthetist and lives in Salem preferred bypass surgery to be done for the patient as it has long-term benefits, and therefore he brought the patient in to Kauvery Hospital, Salem.
Further investigations at Kauvery hospital revealed that only one vessel (LAD) had 100% blockage. Minimally Invasive Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting (MI-CABG) procedure was recommended for him and performed, instead of the normal bypass surgery. The patient recovered quickly and was moved from ICU to the ward in a day, and discharged soon after.
Speaking of this, Dr. Murugu Sundara Pandiyan, Senior Consultant – Cardio Thoracic Surgery says, “Minimally invasive procedure is performed through a small incision made in the patient’s chest, whereby the surgeon uses special instruments to access the heart through the rib cage. An incision of about 5-6 cms was made instead of the 15-16 cms incision required for a traditional bypass surgery. Since the incision was very small, there was less pain and the scar was almost not visible. The patient recovery time in this case is also very fast as opposed to traditional surgery – normally the surgeon would have to cut through the chest bone or sternum, and it takes 6-8 weeks for the bone to heal. The MI-CABG procedure also has the advantage that there is less risk of infection.”
Mr. V. Selvam Facility Director of Salem Kauvery hospital Dr. Murugu Sundara Pandiyan and his team for their commitment to patient health by deploying the latest treatment methods that offer better and long-term benefits, which establishes Kauvery Hospital Salem as a centre of medical excellence yet again.
