Osteoporosis is a condition where decreased bone strength increases the risk of a broken bone. It is the most common reason for a broken bone and the leading cause of disability among the elderly. Bones that commonly break include the back bones, the bones of the forearm, and the hip. Until a bone breaks, there are typically no symptoms. Bones may weaken to such a degree that a break may occur with minor stress or spontaneously. Chronic pain and a decreased ability to carry out normal activities may occur following a broken bone. Post-menopausal women in particular are vulnerable to develop osteoporosis. Bone and Joint week is observed between October 12th to 20th worldwide to create awareness about osteoporosis and osteoarthritis among the general public. Kauvery Hospital conducted special camps during the week for early diagnosis and treatment of this condition.

Kauvery Hospital in partnership with Rotary Club of Madras East presents Dr KV Thiruvengadam award for excellence in health care to eminent doctors every year. This year, the award was given to Dr Jaishree Gajaraj for her exemplary accomplishments in the field of Obstetrics & Gynaecology. She is also a great medical teacher, training the next generation of doctors.

Kauvery Hospital conducted its first cadaveric multi organ harvesting from a 69 year old gentleman from a very conservative and orthodox family, who died of heart attack and bleeding in the brain. The relatives of the recipients are extremely grateful to the family of the donor and in particular to his wife who said “If you are entitled to receive an organ, why can’t you also donate”. It is very heartening to note that organ donation is being accepted by people from all walks of life.

The Chennai citizenry is concerned about the impending monsoon with the possibility of flooding and outbreak of diseases. I request all of you to stay safe and healthy during this difficult period.
