Ultrasound of abdomen

  • Solid organs such as liver, pancreas, kidneys, spleen and fluid filled structures such as gall bladder, urinary bladder can be assessed
  • No radiation involved and safe investigation
  • Preferably done in fasting status
  • Not a great tool to diagnose stomach and intestinal problems

Computed Tomography (CT or CAT) Scan

  • Best test to diagnose stones in urinary tract.
  • Involves ionizing radiation and is thus avoided in children and during pregnancy
  • Internal organs of abdomen such as liver, biliary tract, pancreas, spleen, kidneys, intestines and pelvic organs could be visualized.
  • Also shows detailed images of bones, tissues, muscles and blood vessels


    MR Enterography/ CT Enterography
  • Magnetic resonance enterography helps the doctor see into the small intestine (for inflammation, bleeding, etc)
  • CT enterography uses CT imagery and contrast material to check the small intestine

    Barium Enema/Barium Swallow
  • Enema checks lower gastrointestinal tract (colon, rectum)
  • Swallow checks upper gastrointestinal tract (back of mouth, throat, esophagus)

    Endoscopy/Colonoscopy/Sigmoidoscopy
  • Upper GI endoscopy is used to visualize the food pipe, stomach and small intestine.
  • Colonoscopy procedure helps the check the inside of your entire large intestine or colon using a long tube with camera.
  • Sigmoidoscopy is a test to check the rectum and lower part of your colon or large intestine (the sigmoid colon)Laproscopy
  • Laparoscopy uses small lighted tube with video camera that is inserted into the abdominal area.
  • Images are seen on a computer screen


    Abdominal angiogram
  • Can be done by fluoroscopy machine (cathlab) or noninvasively by MRI or CT
  • Charts blood flow to abdominal organs like liver, kidneys and intestines
  • Checks for bleeding in the abdomen
  • Check for blockage of arteries and vein of angiogram
