Senior health – Do’s and Dont’s beyond Age 65

As one grows older, many activities that one took for granted become more difficult. Here are some tips on what seniors[1] should do and shouldn’t:-
In the house:-
Do’s
- Have railings installed to aid walking
- Keep a straight backed, firm chair for sitting
- Have an uncluttered space
- Keep your TV at an optimum distance for viewing
- Use Western toilets
- Use a grip shower mat while bathing
- Sleep on a firm mattress
Dont’s
- Keep low seating arrangements
- Leave your bathroom floor wet
- Sleep too far from the bathroom
- Install dim lighting
- Lift or move heavy things on your own
When outside:-
Do’s
- Look down and be alert when walking
- Wear comfortable, firm shoes with a good grip
- Use sloping paths instead of steps
- Plan your outings and routes carefully
- Carry essential medication with you
- Take a snack and water

- Try to aid other elderly persons
- Try to do too many errands at one time

- Maintain contact with friends and family
- Have people over often
- Join clubs and other activities
- Be friendly

- Be reclusive and withdrawn

- Stop attending functions

- Take your medicines on time
- Make sure that you see your doctor regularly
- Do your medical tests when necessary
