Fitting finale to a forbidding year

Dr Venkita Suresh, re-lives 2020’s highlights, recalls its darkest and brightest moments.

How does humankind continue to progress on a planet where mighty dinosaurs became extinct, monkeys remained on trees, and much exotic flora and fauna were wiped off the face of the earth?

How did humankind get to the moon, commute regularly to the International Space Station, and set the scene for ferries to Mars and back?

Because humankind paused, took stock of the threat, contemplated, gathered knowledge, evolved tactics and strategies, tested them on the ground, did the course- corrections, and advanced, regardless.

SARS CoV 2 is invasive.  So are surgeons.  Who wins? In a battle of titans, the one who takes nothing for granted prevails.

Covid sorely tested our mettle- our ability to stifle our fear and muster our courage, to erase our doubts and firm up our resolve, and to build our defences against an invisible but intensely felt enemy in the air.

2020 was a tumultuous year from start to finish and 2021 begins on a hopeful note. At this moment of transition, the most appropriate thing to do is to re-live its highlights, recall its darkest and brightest moments and gather courage and confidence to change our lives for the better with our own skills, ingenuity, and industry.

In the thick of battle, while the fire was raging and smoke was rising on the field of war with the pandemic, the warrior – surgeons and anaesthesiologists[1] of Kauvery, nurses, technicians, and their supporting teams rapidly scaled up the offering of surgery, skilfully negotiated the stormy path and organized emergency, semi-emergency and elective surgeries.

Patients’ lives and their safety mattered. Pandemic or not the battle cry was “The Difficult, we do immediately, the Impossible takes a little longer.”

We bid a fitting finale to a forbidding year that was fraught with great danger. We at Kauvery negotiated with great presence of mind, unparalleled resilience, unwavering courage and determination, outstanding knowledge, wisdom and skill, and untiring perseverance in our pursuit of perfection.

We owe it to ourselves, our institution, our science, and our patients, to ‘chronicle’ this life-changing, work – changing and world-changing experience, earned the hard way, by surmounting seemingly impossible odds arraigned against our favour. Incredible as it seems now, we survived and succeeded.

Now, that story remains to be told, in its entirety, scrupulously documented, elegantly structured, smartly formatted, and swiftly published, to inspire us, and generations to come, forever.

The new year shall see the dawn of that journal, the indelible canvas on which we shall paint our immortal classics!
