Need to Know – Rights and Responsibilities of the Patient

Rights
It is important to know your rights as a patient at the hospital. A patient has a right to the following:
- To know the cost of treatment and the cost of all services
- To know the names of the doctor and staff administering treatment[1]
- To have privacy during consultation with the doctor, while undergoing tests and medical treatment
- To receive services and treatment regardless of the patient’s ethnicity, colour, religion, gender, age, family background, nationality and physical and mental disability
- To be safe-guarded from inappropriate physical, mental, sexual treatment and attacks
- To the physical and mental safety of the disabled, seniors and children
- To be informed about all health information
- To be fully informed of the benefits and risks of the treatment, as well as side effects and expected outcome
- To accept or refuse treatment in line with Indian culture and traditions, and the Indian constitution
- To refuse to receive treatment
- To receive the discharge summary in writing, as per the hospital protocols
- To receive a copy of the medical report and medical test results, as per the hospital protocols
- To be transferred in order to avail another facility
- To be informed of the nature of the pain during treatment and ways to get relief from it
- To lodge a complaint about the service they are receiving
- To receive an explanation in response to their complaint
- To receive anesthesia, blood and blood component transfusion, and severe treatment options, only upon receipt of the patient’s consent
- To receive the patient’s consent before testing
- To seek and receive permission for the patient and his/her family to view the patient’s medical documents
- To receive consent before every testing
- The patient should be allowed to take foods of his/her choice, in consultation with the doctor, and be allowed to profess the religion of his/her choice
Responsibilities
Just as a patient has rights, he/she also has certain responsibilities. That is, they do not have to wait to be informed about their treatment, it is their responsibility to find out.
- You must provide information about you and your family members’ health, in order for us to offer you our best services
- You must provide complete and correct information, including your full name and complete address
- You must also participate in deciding the best treatment option for you. And for the treatment to be carried out as planned, you must follow the instructions given to you correctly
- You must treat the service provider with due respect and acknowledge their services
- You must understand their need to prioritize emergency patients and those that require special care
- You must follow the facility rules and regulations regarding smoking, visitor count, visiting hours, use of mobile phones etc.
- You must understand your financial commitment towards the healthcare service and pay accordingly
- It is important to give your consent for the hospital treatment and informed consent relating to surgical and non-surgical treatments, blood and blood components transfusion or other severe treatments.
- You must be kind and courteous to the hospital staff, other patients and visitors.
- Please be there for your appointments on time
- If you need to cancel or reschedule your appointment, please do so as early as possible
- Please do not share medicines given to a patient with any other patient
- For treatments covered by insurance, give accurate and complete information[2] about the patient, and work with the hospital to help the hospital receive its due payment
- Please call and inform the hospital immediately, if the condition of the patient gets worse or if the patient does not follow instructions.
- Please follow the instructions given properly, for your treatment to go as planned
- Please attend follow up appointments as scheduled
- Do not take any medicines without consulting the doctor
- Provide correct and true information about yourself
