Tips to save water this summer

Whenever there is a lack of access to potable and fresh water for drinking and sanitation, the situation means that the water is scarce. Some of the contributing factors to water scarcity are climate change, water overuse, and increased pollution.

Here are some useful tips where you can save a considerable amount of water at home, in the garden and at the work place. If each one of us follows this, then this situation will never arise in the future. Are you ready to conserve water?

 

Tips to save water…
1. Make sure that your building does rain water harvesting.
2. Ensure that your overhead tank doesn’t overflow.
3. Cover your car so you don’t need to wash it daily.
4. Get your air conditioner cleaned and serviced to reduce dripping.

Maintenance at home…
1. Get leaky taps fixed at once
2. If your hose has a hole, either seal it or replace the hose to reduce wastage of water.
3. Use a mug to collect the water from leaks till the plumber comes. It can be reused.

In the bathroom…
1. Don’t leave the tap running while brushing your teeth.
2. Use a glass of water to rinse mouth
3. Fill up mug with water to wet your razor or to lather.
4. Use short bursts of water from the tap to clean razors and brushes.
5. Don’t shower, use bucket and mug instead.

In the kitchen…
1. Wash in a bowl of water which can be reused.
2. If you wash dishes by hand, fill the sink with water and wash dishes in that.
3. Get a water regulator for your kitchen sink to regulate and reduce the flow of water.
4. Drain excess water from the water purifier or RO into a vessel for later use.

When cooking food…
1. Use minimum water when boiling vegetables, rice or meats.
2. Measure water for cooking.
3. Eat more salads and fresh fruit.
4. Don’t use water to defrost your food. Instead, use the microwave.
5. Use dividers in the pressure cooker to cook multiple items at the same time.

Use your appliances optimally…
1. Gather dirty clothes and wash only when there is enough for a full load.
2. In summer, use the shortest cycle for washing clothes.
3. Add soak water with clothes when transferring to the machine.
4. If you use an electric dishwasher, ensure that it is has a full load before using it.
5. Get your appliances serviced to ensure optimum water usage.

In the garden…
1. Water plants early in the morning or late in the evening. It reduces evaporation.
2. Water base of plants, near the soil and not the top where the leaves are.
3. Install water butts to drain excess water from the house into the garden.
4. Don’t over-water your garden because soil cannot store extra water.
5. Water your garden manually. Don’t use sprinklers, this summer.

In the workplace…
1. Notify office maintenance about any leaks at your workplace.
2. Lead by example. You save water, others will too.
3. Raise awareness at work by having a “Save Water” Day.
4. Put up flyers in your workplace with water saving tips.
