The importance of Physiotherapy after Orthopedic surgeries

Orthopedic surgeries cannot be taken lightly since they affect your mobility. Doctors will only advise surgery as a last resort and only if it will improve the quality of life. Medical advancements have made these surgeries much more efficient with decreased recovery time. The recovery time for orthopedic surgeries vary, depending on the type of surgery, the age of the person and their general health.

If you have decided to go in for an orthopedic surgery, your team of doctors will guide you from start to finish. You can rest assured that after the surgery is over, and sometimes even before you are mobile, you will get a visit from the team’s physiotherapist to make sure that you are progressing well. They will consult with the doctors, assess your range of motion, and the function of the injury site, and the degree of pain you are in and work out a plan to help rehabilitation.

Orthopedic surgeries that require physiotherapy include:

• Total joint replacements of the hip or knee
• Ankle, elbow or knee reconstructions
Spinal surgery
• Rotator cuff repairs
• Laminectomies
• Meniscectomies
• Total shoulder replacements

Each of these surgeries will affect a different part of the body and the exercises and physiotherapy recommended for them will differ. Orthopedic physical therapy is necessary to restore a patient’s strength and motion.

Why is physiotherapy after surgery important?

1. It brings back mobility to the affected area
2. It helps in pain management
3. It makes the patient more confident and makes them independent
4. It strengthens the muscles and tissues that were traumatized during surgery
5. It prevents blood clots

Most rehabilitation programs will give a mix of the following:-

1. Strengthening exercises
2. Exercises to increase mobility
3. Electric stimulation
4. Laser treatment
5. Regulated pain medication

Whether your surgery was minimally invasive or a major, open surgery, you will need the help of your physiotherapist and your team of doctors to get you back on your feet again.
