Complications of preterm birth

  • Apnea – Lack of oxygen
  • Respiratory distress syndrome (breathing disorder)
  • Intraventricular hemorrhage (bleeding into the brain’s ventricular system)
  • Patent ductus arteriosus (a connecting blood vessel fails to close after birth)
  • Necrotizing enterocolitis (portion of the bowel dies)
