Dr. Prithika Chary as Chairperson for Mental health in the Rotary Club of Madras Temple City heard the story of a 22 year old girl who had received a heart transplant 9 years ago in an earlier meeting. Being a consultant Neurologist & Neurosurgeon in Kauvery & aware of an active transplant program in our hospital, she was inspired to dispel ignorance on this. She is also Honorary Advisory member of The Duchess Club a 22 year old women’s club started by 5 ladies to empower women. She felt since women are often decision makers in health matters in the family, they could be educated on this.
So she made all three organisations partner together to celebrate Organ Donation Day (13th August) through a awareness program on organ donation. Doctors explained about brain death & criteria for organ donation & aftercare post-transplant & the transplant coordinator covered FAQ. But the most effective message was conveyed when a liver & heart transplant recipients shared their before & after stories.
It was a warm, intensely human, emotional function which touched the soul of over 100 members of Duchess Club, Rotarians & press & media. Many took a pledge & collected cards to become organ donors.
