Retrospective Analysis of Organ Donor status in Kidney transplantation in our hospital – Single center study
Print This Article

Introduction:

End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) is alarmingly increasing worldwide. Successful kidney transplantation is the best solution to this problem and Deceased Organ Donation is the biggest contributor for organ donation. There is a huge demand -supply gap in transplantation. In India it is estimated that more than 200.000 patients reach ESRD annually and we perform less than 10, 000 transplants per year. Most of the organ donors are live donors and the Deceased organ donation is increasing.

The US data indicates roughly 100,000 + patients need kidney transplantation and every day 20 of them die without an organ and every 14 minutes someone is added into the transplant list. 2/3rds of the transplants are form Deceased donors and the rest from Live donation.

Aim:

To retrospectively analysis the renal donor status in our transplant program

Materials and Methods:

The renal transplantation data is analyzed retrospectively in our transplant program .The study period is from Jan 2015 to 2023 August The Live Cadaver transplantation ratio, age, gender, degree of HLA matching, relationship to the recipient were analyzed.

Results:

Total number of renal transplants performed during this period was 110. Of which 102 were live related donor transplantation to 8 Deceased donor transplantation (92.7 : 7.3 %) . 100 transplantations were blood group compatible and 10 were ABO incompatible transplantation.

The gender ratio (M:F) among live donation were 24:78. Mother was the commonest donor (41) followed by wife (20), father (10) , sister (7) , brother (4) HUSBAND (3), and aunts, and other relatives contributed the remaining the mean age of the donor was 47 years.

Age distribution of the donors revealed 0ne donor in < 30 years, 20 donors between 30-39, 34 donors in 40-49 years, 43 donors in 50-59 years and 4 donors above 60 years.

Haploidentical donors were 60, 6 antigen matching in 4 , 20 were HLA mismatched and 18 had < 3 antigen matched transplantation .

Conclusions: Our renal transplantation program is predominantly live related . Women contributed to almost 2/3rds of the renal donors.( Mother, wife and sister in that order). Most of the donors are in between 40-60 years of age and 82 donors had genetic matching of some degree with the recipient. Majority of the transplants are blood group compatible.
