AIM:
To estimate the prevalence of vascular access types in our maintenance chronic hemodialysis patients.
METHOD:
The study population included all patients undergoing hemodialysis treatment in Kauvery hospital, Alwarpet, Chennai. Patients age, gender, basic disease presence, ischemic heart disease were captured. The nature of vascular access – AVF, graft, perm catheter, femoral catheter, and temporary vascular access profile were studied.
RESULT:
Overall patients on hemodialysis are 177.
AGE DISTRIBUTION:
GENDER- Male:female = 117:60
BASIC RENAL DISEASE – Diabetic Nephropathy: Non Diabetic Renal disease – 95:82
IHD PREVALENCE – 61 out of 177 patients – 34.4%
AVF DURATION:
Of 177 Patients on hemodialysis, HD through AVF 142 patients (80.2%), Graft 7 patients (3.95%), Perm catheter 5 patients (2.82%), IJV / Subclavian catheter 22 patients (12.4%) and femoral catheter 1 patient (0.56%).
Of 22 patients, on temporary catheter dialysis initiation was done < 1 month in 19 patients, whereas 3 patients was on temporary catheter, due to their AVF / Graft dysfunction present at the time of study.
CONCLUSION:
AV fistula is the common vascular access in hemodialysis. Only a few patients are on long permanent access like graft and perm catheter.
