Yoga for Women

Yoga is not only a physical practice but also a spiritual and mental practice. Yoga has great healing powers and can help balance hormones, keep weight in check, help menopause pass smoothly and help maintain a healthy digestive system. Yoga activates the energy chakras and provides strength to women to deal with their physiological & psychological changes.

Why Yoga Is Essential for Women:

  • Women are under a lot of pressure to maintain a perfect balance between personal & professional life.
  • With household chores, unending to-do lists and taking care of the kids and the elderly, they barely find the time and energy for themselves after doing all such things.
  • But this multitasking is what makes it more important for every woman to engage in some physical activity and there can be nothing better than yoga.

Pre-Requisites for Yoga Practice:

  • Yoga requires no special equipment or clothes, though an inexpensive yoga mat may help provide cushion and grip.
  • Yoga can be practiced at home or office.
  • If you have limited mobility, it can be practiced from a chair or bed.
  • We can work on some of the seated postures during the day while at the computer.
  • We can practice the deep diaphragm-based breathing techniques anywhere/anytime.
  • Even during this pandemic, yoga can be learned and practiced online. This also makes it convenient for busy women.

Yoga can be an effective adjunct therapy for a variety of conditions. Yoga can improve some specific conditions affecting women.

  • Asthma
  • Chronic pain

It is always advisable to check with health care professionals before embarking on any exercise program particularly if we are out of shape, over 65 years or have any serious health problems.

You definitely need to do so if you have high blood pressure, glaucoma, rheumatoid, spinal disc injuries, history of retinal detachment or heart disease, or if you are pregnant.

Asanas That Benefit Women:

  • Child’s Pose
  • Garland Pose
  • Tree Pose
  • Goddess Pose
  • Boat Pose
  • Pigeon Pose
  • Plough Pose
  • Downward Dog Pose
  • Cobra Pose
  • Camel Pose
  • Frog Pose

Yoga Practice:

  • The session will start with a gentle warm-up exercise which is usually a sun salutation series coupled with breathing exercises and gentle stretches.
  • The instructor will take us through several postures (asanas).
  • We may hold these positions for few seconds/minutes according to our strength and stamina.
  • Yoga is not about getting into perfect posture. As long as we keep it safe and mindful, the pose is perfect.
  • The session may last for 45 to 60 minutes. Most yoga sessions end with a short meditation and final relaxation (Corpse Pose).
  • Important mantra – do not push beyond your limits.

Breathe slowly & deeply to stretch and relax the muscles.

Right Time to Practice Yoga

Yoga can be practiced anytime of the day depending on our schedule and on our goals. Morning yoga will energise you & prepare you for the day. Evening yoga with relaxation poses can lead to better sleep.
