
A Special Women’s Day Recipe
Ingredients
- Tofu (firm) – 300 gm
- Onions, cut into small pieces – 2
- Tomato, cut into small pieces – 1
- Garlic cloves, minced – 4 to 5
- Oil – 2 tablespoons
- Salt to taste
- Chopped spring onions for garnish
- A pinch of turmeric
For the Chilli Paste or Sambal Paste:
- Dried chillies, deseeded – 15
- Small onions – 5
- Garlic cloves – 6
- Ginger piece – 1 inch in size
Recipe
Chilli Paste (Sambal Paste):
- Soak the chillies in water.
- Boil for 3 to 4 minutes.
- Strain and remove the chillies.
- Blend the chillies with small onions, garlic and ginger.
- Blend to a smooth paste.
- This paste should be cooked in oil and stored.
Alternatively, store-bought chilli paste can also be used.
Tofu:
- Cut tofu into squares and marinate with turmeric and salt.
- Pan fry until the tofu pieces turn golden brown in colour.
- Remove and keep aside.
- To the same pan, add some more oil.
- Add the onions and garlic.
- Fry until the onions turn translucent.
- To this, add 2 tablespoons of chilli paste (adjust spice according to taste).
- Once this cooks and the oil separates, add the chopped tomato.
- Cook until the tomato becomes soft.
- Now, add 2 tablespoons of water.
- When this comes to a slight simmer, add the tofu.
- Add salt to taste.
- Add the cut spring onions.
- Tasty and healthy tofu sambal is now ready!
Tofu is called “soya paneer” in India. It’s made of soybean curd that’s similar in texture to paneer. Soy is a complete protein that contains all the nine essential amino acids.
