My Dear K-Way Readers,

Welcome to the month of June. Try to stay cool this warm month!

Time flies; hopefully, so shall our worries.Modelling by scientists indicate the wave will peak May end or by early June and then begin to plateau and drop. We already see worries about a third wave. Learning from our lessons in failing to prepare for the second wave, let us be prepared for a third wave. It’s twice smart, to be both prepared, and do our best to prevent. Both are possible and doable.

We are seeing light at the end of the tunnel; soon we shall emerge into sunshine. But that hope should be bolstered with effort and determination. Sound public health measures and good science together will tame this once wild virus of Wuhan now taunting us with its variants.

When you are dealing with an unfamiliar and unpredictable pathogen and the disease it causes, effective, efficient and economical actions are called for. A certain phrase in English, the one always stressed by one of our intellectual and inspirational leaders of COVID at our hospital, comes to my mind. These three short words have a great and deep meaning in this pandemic:

Less is More

As a family physician whose role is to be also a friend, philosopher and guide to patients infected with COVID, I have a few of my personal experiences to convey to you today.COVID is a self-limiting viral infection in most people. It is a cause for concern but lesser the medication, more are the chances of a favourable outcome. Panicked patients invariably over or self-medicate themselves and get sicker from the adverse effects- their own side effects and from their interactions with other drugs. Kindly remember that good hydration and nutrition are the hallmarks of sensible approach to any viral infection.

But getting good medical advice during the pandemic has posed challenges to all patients and families. Telemedicine is a boon today wherein the patients can consult with us from their homes. Patients need not worry how they will be able to come to us directly. This indirectly also helps prevent the spread of infection as patients don’t move about. A helpful interaction is possible between the doctor and the patient, quality time can be spent and the right follow-up and review scheduled. This also facilitates early intervention where the disease has progressed. All mild to moderate illnesses can successfully recover with minimal but appropriate medications.

We at Kauvery are very happy to reach out to every one of you.

Kindly do not neglect your symptoms by hesitating to reach out to medical help through telemedicine during these challenging times. You can contact us through the link below for telemedicine consultation.

Highlights @ Kauvery

Kauvery Hospitals invest in the future by teaching and training tomorrow’s physicians, nurses and health care technicians. We run four post graduate programs, offering teaching, training and research: DrNB, DNB, MRCEM and MEM. DrNB is a prestigious doctoral, superspecialty program. Kauvery Hospital Chennai offers the only DrNB program in Vascular Surgery in the state. Kauvery”s colleges of nursing and health sciences train graduate nurses, physician assistants and technicians. We also offer skilling and cross skilling programs to train healthworkers of the future. Despite the stress of these pandemic years, 2020 and 21 saw our DNB students graduating by qualifying at their examinations on the very first attempt.

That inspired Dr. Anna Mary Thomas to carry that flag and qualify last week at DNB in Internal Medicine. She is fortunate to have been groomed by one of Kauvery’s most outstanding clinicians, Dr. Dominic Rodriguez, Senior Consultant in Medicine, Kauvery Hospitals, Trichy.

Kauvery now has a DNB Alumni Organization which keeps Kauvery as a home to its past graduates. The country is direly in need of medical specialists to serve patients exceptionally well in these exceedingly dangerous times. Kauvery has offered to the National Board of Examinations to run several two- year DNB programs in a number of clinical specialties. Kauvery”s unique focus is to instill in these healthcare warriors and leaders of tomorrow a talent for clinical research. Kauvery offers two in- house online and print journals as vehicles to carry their original research into understanding both the causation as well as novel new ways of healing of injury and disease. Thus we hope to create in each Kauvery Hospital a universe-city of academic excellence .
