Abstract

A 19-year-old female patient presented with congenital left-sided Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) ankylosis, significantly impacting her quality of life. Despite multiple surgeries, her condition persisted, leading to nutritional deficiencies and body image disturbances. This case report highlights the successful outcome of reconstructive surgery, restoring TMJ function, and improving the patient’s overall well-being.

Introduction

Congenital TMJ ankylosis is a rare condition that can significantly impact an individual’s quality of life. This case report presents a 19-year-old female patient who underwent reconstructive surgery for congenital left-sided TMJ ankylosis.

Case Presentation

A 19-year-old female patient presented with congenital left-sided TMJ ankylosis, which had significantly affected her quality of life from birth. Despite multiple surgeries at ages 8 and 12, her condition persisted, leading to nutritional deficiencies and body image disturbances.

Clinical Intervention

The patient underwent reconstructive surgery for TMJ ankylosis aimed at restoring function and cosmetic appearance. A multidisciplinary team of surgeons, anesthesiologists, and nursing staff were involved in her care.

Postoperative Care and Recovery

Postoperatively, the patient experienced an uneventful recovery, although it was slower than expected. By the second postoperative day, she was able to begin eating soft foods, marking a significant milestone in her recovery.

Nursing Assessment

  • Physical assessment revealed limited mouth opening and difficulty in consuming solid food.
  • Psychological assessment revealed anxiety and depression related to body image disturbances.

The patient and her family expressed gratitude for the exceptional care and support they received during her hospital stay. They appreciated the continuous effort of the consultant team and nursing staff, whose dedication and expertise played a critical role in her healing process.
