Importance of Organ Donation, my personal perspective

I am writing to share my thoughts on the crucial topic of organ donation, which I believe warrants greater attention and support from our community. As an OT Technician at Kauvery Hospital, I have witnessed firsthand the profound impact of this altruistic act. Organ donation is a selfless gesture that has the power to save lives and improve the quality of life for countless individuals. Each year, thousands of people await organ transplants, hoping for a second chance at life. However, the demand for organs far exceeds the available supply, leading to prolonged waiting periods and, tragically, preventable deaths.

My name is Thilipan working as an OT Technician in Kauvery hospital. Recently, I experienced a deeply personal situation that has further solidified my belief in the importance of organ donation.

One morning, as a usual routine, I took bath, had a little breakfast and I was ready to go to the hospital for my work but I experienced an unpleasant feeling within myself. Once I reached the hospital, I received a call from my family informing me that my father had fallen in the bathroom. I rushed to my home, found my father unresponsive but heart rate was present. I rushed him through an ambulance to Kauvery hospital, Hosur where he was admitted to the emergency department and later transferred to the intensive care unit (ICU) for further management.

He was there in ICU for two days. According to the CT scan report, my father had suffered a stroke. He became dependent for all his activities of daily living including feeding. Feed was given through Ryle’s tube. As his condition improved, he was shifted to the ward.

One day, suddenly he was found unconscious in the ward again. For a second time, he was admitted to the intensive care unit, and intubated because he could not breathe properly. After several days in the ICU, as there was no improvement seen, the doctors recommended for a neurological re-evaluation. There were no brain reflexes found; hence he was confirmed to have had brain death. We were very shocked to hear this and we couldn’t bear it. Despite the heart-breaking news, my family and I made the decision to donate his organs, as I had recently read an article about the profound impact of organ donation.

With the consent of my family, my father’s organs were successfully transplanted, and I was informed that his donations had saved multiple lives. This knowledge brought me a sense of solace and the realization that my father’s legacy would continue through the lives he had touched and I am happy to know that my father still lives through them.
