Vallarai Keerai Soup
Vallarai keerai is rich in vitamin C and has immense health benefits, the most important being enhancing brain activity and nervous system functioning. Known as brahmi leaves in English, they reduce stress and anxiety by decreasing the levels of the stress hormone cortisol.
Vallarai keerai soup recipe is as follows:
Ingredients
- Vallarai/brahmi leaves – 1 bunch
- Small onions – 6
- Garlic pods – 6
- Ginger piece – 1 inch
- Pepper corns – 1/2 tsp
- Cumin seeds – 1/2 tsp
- Dhaniya powder/coriander powder – 1 tsp
- Cooked and mashed rice/rice starch – 5 tbsp
- Salt to taste
Method
- Grind the small onions, pepper and ginger to a paste and keep it aside.
- Next pulse* the leaves.
- Heat oil in a pan, temper with cumin seeds and add the garlic and fry.
- Now add the onion paste to it and fry.
- Add the dhaniya/coriander powder, salt and the vallarai keerai.
- Add 1.5 cups of water and allow it to boil.
- Once it starts boiling, add the starch water or the rice paste.
- Simmer for about 5 minutes. If needed, add more water and salt. Serve the soup hot.
* To grind the leaves in the mixie lightly
