International Women’s Day has marked the plight and achievements of women for more than a century, with the first informal observance held in 1909. Since then it has developed into a formally recognized day by the UN and is celebrated around the world.
When it first began, women were demanding that they be given the right to vote – which they received in Britain in 1918 but just last year in Saudi Arabia the demand was the right to hold public office and to be given equal employment rights and opportunities as men.
It is undoubtedly a special day for women. With more than 70% women in the workforce it was an important occasion for us at Kauvery Hospital. This is how we celebrated women’s day in style:-
School Outreach program: Our Nurses conducted a community outreach program at Chennai Corporation School, Mylapore on the 6th of March. They raised awareness about Women’s health, Hygiene and importance of good eating habits through role-plays and musical drama.
Women’s wellness carnival:
The women of today are masters in multitasking. They strive to do the best both at home and in their careers. However their health always takes a back seat. The doctors of our hospital organized a women’s wellness carnival on the 7th and 8th of March. The carnival was inaugurated by our esteemed Executive Director Dr. Aravindan Selvaraj, and Dr. Prithika Chary a renowned Neurosurgeon. We were delighted when Dr. Aravindan not only highlighted the contribution of women in healthcare; he declared that this year is the year of women empowerment in Kauvery. The carnival had a series of health talk, panel discussion and practical workshops. It was truly an event filled with inspiration, awareness, participation, celebration and learning. Women’s day Health Packages were gifted to Visually Challenged children from Lotus Foundation and Women Police officers were recognized for their remarkable service to the community.
Self Defence Workshop:
With increasing violence against women, we felt the need for women to be aware of basic self-defence techniques that they can use in a hostile situation. Kauvery Hospital in association with Women Police Officers from All-Women’s police station, Mylapore arranged for a self defence workshop for women in Nageshwara Rao Park. The workshop focused on awareness around potential dangerous situations as well as on basic techniques that can be used in case such a situation arises. Both our employees and the members of the general public were benefitted.
