Traumatic Brain Injury
Traumatic brain injury usually results from a violent blow or jolt to the head or body. An object penetrating the brain tissue can also cause traumatic brain injury. Mild injury may affect your brain cells temporarily. Bruising, torn tissues, bleeding and other physical damage can be caused due to a serious brain injury. These can also result in long-term complications or even death. The injury can be of any type – it can either be closed, without cut or laceration of the skin or it can tear through the skin and/or penetrate into the skull.
Treatment options for Traumatic Brain Injury
- Immediate assessment and stabilization of the airway and circulation
- Controlling intracranial pressure with medications or hyperventilation or high-dose barbiturate therapy
- Improving cerebral perfusion pressure
- Decompressive craniotomies
- Hypertonicity needs medications like dantrolene, baclofen, diazepam and tizanidine.
