Chennai, 13th August 2021: World Organ Donation Day isobserved globally every year to create awareness about the noble cause of organ donation and urge more people to volunteer for the same. To mark the occasion, Kauvery Hospitals, one of the leading healthcare chains in Tamil Nadu, kick started a campaign to create awareness and urge people to take a pledge to donate their organs.

Through the initiative the hospital encouragedthree thousand staff members to take a pledge. The campaign aims to reach out to fifty thousand employees across corporate companies in the state. The campaign van, which was flagged off from Kauvery Hospital Hosur (10th August), travelled to Kauvery Hospital Salem (11th Aug),Kauvery Hospital Trichy (12th Aug), concluded the campaign at Kauvery Hospital Chennai on 13th Aug 2021, thus promoting considerable interest and awareness among the public. The doctors at all the four centers gathered staff members and discussed about organ donation and its importance.

The mobile van was stationed at prime locations at all the above cities where they distributed seed balls to the public and issued donor cards for those who were interested in knowing about organ donation. The initiative urged the people to volunteer for organ donation by taking a pledge on the hospital website.

“Organ Transplantation has become a very successful treatment with several medicaladvancements. Yet around 5 lakh people are dying every year in our country with organ failure and waiting for transplantation. Even though the success of living donor transplantation in liver and kidneys has saved thousands of lives, deceased organ donation will change this scenario as each donor will give a new lease of life to 8 patients and the tissues harvested can be used in 50 other patients. The moment of loss can turn to a seed of hope by organ donation and hence the awareness needs to improve. ” says Dr. Elankumaran K., Head of Liver Disease & Transplantation Centre, Kauvery Hospital, Chennai.

Tamil Nadu has been one of the top statesin organ donation. However, there has been a setback with the onset of pandemic. “Though we are one of the best performing states in organ donation, we still have to go a long way to meet the demand- availability gap for organs. Many patients are still waiting for donors, which puts them in a dark place physically and economically. The pandemic has also stopped people from coming forward to receive transplants due to fear of infection. We are trying to create this awareness among the patients and donors on timelytransplantations which will help save lives. We are also working towards restoring confidence in organ donation and transplantation, and thereby saving and supporting precious lives,” says Dr. Aravindan Selvaraj Co-Founder and Executive Director, Kauvery Hospital Chennai.

As part of the campaign, the hospital alsoconducted a poster designing competition for its employees to express their own unique ideas and insights   to permeate the noble message of organ donation into the hearts and minds of people.

“Our hospital houses internationallytrained surgeons, and highly experienced teams of consultants and technical professionals who assist and support Liver, Kidney , Bone Marrow &  Heart transplants. Our centers of excellence in Renal care, Liver diseases & Transplant Center provide state of the art infrastructure and treatments.

The Light of Humanitarian Spirit has to befirst lit at home before it is carried elsewhere, and hence we begin by encouraging all our staff members to take a pledge on this momentous day. We believe our initiative will help in creating more interest and awareness, and promote the noble, thoughtful and self- less gift of organ donation.”
