India to See Sharp Rise in the Number of Revision Knee Replacement Surgeries in the Coming Decade – Concurs Leading Orthopaedic Surgeons in Chennai
~ Kauvery Hospital organised Live Knee Replacement Surgery Workshop and Discussion – attended by more than 50 Orthopaedic Surgeons from Chennai and around ~
9th July 2018, Chennai: Kauvery Hospital, a leading multi-specialty and tertiary care hospital in Chennai organised a live knee-replacement surgery workshop and panel discussion, attended by more than 50 leading Orthopaedic surgeons.
In India, there is a growing instance of knee replacement surgeries with the increase in people’s life span and better awareness on treatment options and pain management. The country has the second largest number of surgeries conducted for knee and hip replacement after cardio-vascular surgeries.
The aim of the workshop was to address the impending rise in the number of revision knee-replacement surgeries in India in the coming decade, educate them on the recent techniques and at the same time expose them to the need of continuous training and adoption of best practices.
The workshop also aimed to ensure better long-term outcomes by addressing some contiguous areas during performing total knee replacement, prevention and management of failure in the initial surgery, which will in turn lead to the reduction in the number of revision surgeries in the years to come.
Dr. Jorg Leffler, a leading Orthopaedic Surgeon from Germany who was part of the panel discussion spoke about the best practices implemented in the West. Other eminent doctors who attended the daylong event were Dr. Aravindan Selvaraj, Chief Orthopaedic Surgeon and Executive Director of Kauvery Hospital; Dr. S. Chockalingam, Orthopaedic Surgeon at Kauvery Hospital Trichy, Dr. Mukunth, Orthopaedic Specialist, Dr. Pradeep Poonnoose, Department of Orthopaedics CMC Vellore, Dr. Rajkumar Natesan, Consultant Joint Replacement and Trauma Surgeon; and Orthopaedic Surgeons Dr. M. Lakshmi Naathan, Dr. Vijay Chandra Bose and Dr. Arumugam Subramanian.
Commenting on the event, Dr. Aravindan Selvaraj said, “It has been great to have the shared expertise and experiences of Dr. Jorg Leffler from Germany and the leading Orthopaedic Surgeons of Chennai to congregate under one roof. Our aim in the long run is to have fewer patients being admitted due to complications for revision surgery as it can be quite a distressing experience for them and their families.”
Total Knee Replacement surgeries usually are conducted on patients suffering from age-related issues, and involves replacement of natural joints with artificial ones. Today, more and more patients are coming up for knee replacement surgeries as early as in their mid-50s, due to a growing need for active and pain free life. Awareness has also increased manifold and people taking up active sports such as marathons have led to an increase in total knee replacement surgeries increasing. When the implant wears out or develops a problem, patients are required to undergo a second surgery to replace the existing implant, which is referred to as revision surgery. Revision knee replacement does not provide the same lifespan as the initial replacement; moreover, the cost involved is about 2-3 times the original surgery, depending on the complications.
The implications of about 70% reduction in the cost of knee implants after the Government put a cap on the price range was also discussed during the meeting. Patients going to Government hospitals and those from low-income households could avail this facility, whereas private hospitals will need more funds to support the research for newer and better implants. This is very much the need of the hour taking into account the estimated rise in the number of total knee replacement surgeries in the years to come.
