What is Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation(ECMO)?

Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) is a technique to provide both, cardiac and respiratory support in times of crisis.

How does it work?

It oxygenates the patient’s blood outside the body. The machine functions as an artificial lung by oxygenating the blood going through the membrane of the machine. This helps in both lungs and heart support depending on the condition of the patient. When a patient is connected to an ECMO, blood flows through the tube to the artificial lung in the machine filtering out carbon dioxide and resending oxygenated blood into the body.

    ECMO is most effective:

For those recovering from heart failure, lung failure, or heart surgery.

As an option to assess the state of other organs such as the kidney or the brain, before performing a heart or lung procedure.

As standby during complex procedures in the cardiac catheterization lab or the Hybrid Cath Lab Operating Room.

As an aid to a heart assist device, like the left ventricular assist device (LVAD).

For patients scheduled for lung transplant. ECMO helps keep the tissues oxygenated making them a better candidate

Non Invasive Valve Replacement with TAVI

TAVI or Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation is a minimally invasive cardiac procedure to replace aortic valves without the hassle of open heart surgery. This has a host of advantages. To know more, click to see the video.
