Our Dear Ardent K-Way Readers,

This month kind of rekindled my childhood memories of quarterly holidays!

Studying in a convent school, it was always an excitement awaiting the start of October with its immediate holidays, Gandhi Jayanthi followed by two auspicious pooja holidays which were the 8th and 9th day of Dussehra festival.

Adding more happiness to the excitement was the fact that our school books would be kept in the pooja room which literally meant no studies… wow! It was a fun time! Such nostalgic memories of the beautiful dolls and festive decoration! Of course, brings a smile to my face!

Now, coming to the present 2022, as a family physician, this month October fascinates me as it creates an awareness about a lot of important medical information. To begin with, October 1st marks World Geriatric Day, a day to think about what is to be done for the aging population. The advanced medical technology and the awareness of diseases have definitely increased the geriatric population in developing countries. The prevention, early detection of diseases and treatment modalities are the main stay of this increased living span, which need to be really appreciated.

But is that alone enough? What about the quality of life? Has it changed? Well, we need to really analyze this!

Although half of them in their 60s are still maintaining their youthful minds, actually not realizing the fact of physical wear and tear of their body, which is mainly because of their disciplined life style, the other half are living in loneliness with a fear of becoming a burden to the family or society. Unfortunately, the financial crunch in retirement and age related memory impairment or bed ridden conditions are the dreads regarding today’s geriatric population day in and day out.

It should be our aim to bring about a geriatric community free of disease and this cannot be achieved overnight but we need to plan how to achieve this. NO ONE can escape aging and therefore each one of us should take care of ourselves, our elders and our children with a good lifestyle and regular check-ups so that we age gracefully.

Care taker role in elderly is not an easy task but we need to do it happily if necessary.

Do you know this month has its nick name “Pinktober” to create breast cancer awareness too!

Our team of Oncologist have shared their knowledge as articles.

This month, we have brought many different platters of information which may be useful for everyone.
