The Journey of a Fresher Nurse in the ED

How did I come here? How did it go?

Sathyamoorthy

Staff Nurse, Department of Emergency Medicine, Kauvery Hospital, Chennai, India

“A Nurse is one who opens the eyes of a newborn, and gently closes the eyes of a dying man. It’s indeed a blessing to be the first and the last to witness the beginning and the end of life”.

I am proud to be a Registered Nurse.

A little about me:

I am Sathyamoorthy I completed my B.Sc Nursing degree at KKRNC in Bengaluru in December 2021.

After my graduation, I was in the search of a suitable job to improve my knowledge and practical skills in order to practice what I had learned at Nursing College over the past four years of college.

While focusing on my search, I came across advertisements of Kauvery’s Group of Hospitals. There were so many good reviews I was hearing about the hospital, that I was keen to join this institution. So, I applied for the job, and subsequently, I was called for an interview. After a tough and grueling interview testing my knowledge and skill as a fresher, I was finally selected and I set upon my journey in this esteemed institute in Feb 2022.

As soon as I began working here, I was asked which department would I like to join. I volunteered to join the Department of Emergency Medicine, as I was always interested in emergency care, especially because there was always a lot of action happening there all the time. I was given an opportunity to acquire a whole new set of skills and knowledge on emergency management of various conditions.

Some of the things I have learn exclusively here over the last 4 months are:

(a). Triage color coding

(b). Initial assessment of a patient

(c). How to receive a patient safely

(d). Transferring the patient with proper emergency medication and monitoring systems

(e). Sepsis management

(f). ACS management

(g). Acute Stroke Management

(h). Basic life support (BLS)

(i). Advanced cardiac life support (ACLS)

(j). Basic Trauma Life Support (BTLS)

(k). Hospital infection control committee protocols (HICC)

(l). Needle stick injury protocols

(m). Difficult cannulation techniques

I may have made many mistakes, but what was reassuring was that the team always stood by me. The doctors, my seniors and my co-workers have taught me a lot and have always corrected my mistakes without any hesitation. I consider myself very lucky to be in such a wonderful team from who I can learn and fine tune my skills. I have thoroughly have enjoyed being a nurse working in the Emergency department.

I specially want to thank everyone in the ED for this opportunity, especially the Nursing Supervisor, In-charges, Shift In-charges, Senior Staff Nurses and other co-workers – the paramedical staff- and my beloved doctors for contributing to my knowledge and skill and making me a better and a more skillful nurse in such a short span of time.

I am extremely happy to serve people, I am proud to be working at Kauvery hospital and shall continue to give my best in service here.
