Safety Precautions During Rains

The monsoon season is upon us; we have been experiencing heavy rain with more predicted. In the approaching rainy days, it is important that we follow a few health precautions to stay in good shape. Listed below are some pointers that will help.

Water Borne Diseases

  • Truly an issue of concern during this time, water borne diseases are caused by eating or drinking, infected or contaminated, food and water.
  • Cholera, amoebiasis, hepatitis A, etc. are the common water borne diseases reported during the rainy season. These diseases can be avoided by practicing a few safety measures.
  • Ensure that the water consumed is boiled and the food is well cooked.
  • The water should be from a known source and preferably boiled and cooled before consumption.
  • Raw food should be avoided.
  • Buying food outside should also be avoided as food prepared at home is always safer.
  • The symptoms of waterborne diseases are diarrhea and fever and if these symptoms are experienced, it is better to consult a physician immediately.

The Mosquito Menace

  • Mosquitoes breed in stagnant water – especially the mosquitoes causing dengue.
  • Get rid of stagnant water inside or around the house. If it is not possible to clear it, the water can be kept covered to prevent access to mosquitoes.
  • Fitting doors and windows with mosquito nets is a good option.
  • Mosquito repellants, coils, etc., can all be used.

A Few General Safety Precautions

  • Try to stay home as much as possible.
  • If it is necessary to go out, wear proper footwear and clothing that cover the whole body. This is because coming into contact with dirty water can lead to skin infections.
  • Inspect the house for mold. Presence of mold can lead to many respiratory issues.
  • While driving, avoid dark roads and keep to roads that are well-lit.
  • Avoid going close to electric wires.
  • Make sure the home has an emergency kit and torch light.
  • Stock up on essentials when rain is predicted – plan in advance so that going out can be avoided.
