Tests for heart disease

There are a number of tests that will be done to check for heart disease. These tests will check heart structure and function and will check for any kind of blockages in the heart or major arteries that could lead to a heart attack or a stroke.

Electrocardiogram (ECG)

ECG records the pattern of electrical signals.
Can help detect irregularities in your heart’s rhythm.
ECG will be taken once while at rest and once while exercising.

Holter monitoring

This is a portable device.
Records ECG continuously for a period of 24 to 72 hours.
Detects heart rhythm irregularities.

Echocardiogram

This is an ultrasound machine.
Uses high-pitched sound waves.
Picks up echoes of the sound waves as they bounce off the different parts of your heart.

Cardiac catheterization Procedure

A tube is inserted into the vein or artery.
A guide catheter is inserted.
The pressure of heart chambers is measured.
A dye is injected.
The progress of the dye is seen on the X-ray to check for abnormalities.

Cardiac computerized tomography (CT) scan

CT scan uses computer-processed combinations of many X-ray images taken from different angles.
Produces cross-sectional images of specific areas of a scanned object.
Allows the user to see inside the object without opening up.
Image of your heart and chest is taken to check for abnormalities.

Cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)

Uses a magnetic field with pulses of radio wave energy.
Takes pictures of heart structure, size and function.
More detailed images of internal structure of organ can be seen.
The detailed imaging will show any abnormalities.
