In the past, cardiac problems were viewed with fear and it was thought that death could be imminent. While cardiac ailments are serious medical conditions, the advances in cardiac medicine over the last few years have significantly reduced the risk of fatalities and the success rates of the various treatment options have increased dramatically. One of the most effective is the use of lasers. Coronary laser angioplasty is a cutting-edge procedure that makes it possible to eliminate the need for coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery to treat blockages of the artery caused by the collection of fatty deposits (plaque).  Expert cardiologists and vascular surgeons can now use this procedure to remove plaque that is a major cause of coronary artery disease and peripheral artery disease respectively.

Laser Angioplasty in India

Generally, a plaque build-up in the coronary blood vessels was treated by angioplasty in which a balloon was inserted into the artery and then inflated to cause the artery to expand and loosen up the plaque deposits which were then flushed away by the blood flow. While this is an effective procedure and is still in fairly widely in use.

During Laser angioplasty, a laser is used to vaporize the plaque.

Kauvery Hospital Chennai is the first hospital in India to perform Government approved coronary artery Laser angioplasty.

The Procedure

The first step in the treatment process is to be examined by an interventional cardiologist or a vascular specialist who will determine the exact nature of the problem and plan a course of treatment that will take into account the health of the patient including other medical conditions that could affect the treatment outcome. Once the doctor is satisfied that you are a suitable candidate for laser angioplasty, and the surgery can be scheduled.

  • You will be placed under general anesthesia.
  • The interventionist will make a small incision in your groin.
  • Using real-time X-ray images, a wire will be inserted into the femoral artery and moved to the area where the fatty deposits are restricting the blood flow.
  • Once the blockage location is reached, the wire will act as a guide for a tube that will be inserted and moved to the blockage location.
  • A laser will be inserted into the tube and moved to the blockage spot.
  • Once the laser is in place, it will be used to burn away the fatty deposits on the artery walls. The X-ray images, along with the use of contrast dyes will enable the operator to monitor the procedure as it happens.
  • Once the plaque is vaporized, the laser, the tube, and the wire will be removed and the incision in the groin will be closed.
  • You will then be taken to a place to rest and, depending on your overall physical condition and other relevant factors, you may be able to return home by the next day.

The Benefits

Laser angioplasty removes the need for coronary artery bypass graft surgery and this in turn means:

  • Less discomfort to the patient
  • The procedure is much faster
  • The hospital stays and overall recovery time is greatly reduced
  • You will be able to return to an active life in a short period of time.
