Factors that affect Bone Health

Calcium in diet
A diet low in calcium causes:
– Reduced bone density
– Increased risk of fracture
– Early and steady bone loss

Vitamin D
– Synthesized in the body exposed to adequate sunshine
– Aids in absorption and utilization of calcium

Physical activity
– Improves and maintains bone mass
– Reduces risk of fractures

Substance abuse: Tobacco, alcohol and drug abuse, coffee
– Reduces bone mass
– Increases risk of fractures

Gender
– Women (post menopausal) more at risk than men

Age
– Bone weight starts reducing after 30 yrs of age
– Can and must be improved with physical exercise

Genetic reasons
You are at higher risk of osteoporosis if you are
– White Caucasian or Asian by race
– Have a parent, sibling or close relative suffering from osteoporosis

Hormone levels
– Too much thyroid causes bone loss in both genders
– Lower testosterone in men can increase bone loss
– Lower estrogen in post-menopausal women can increase bone loss

Certain ailments
Patients of the following conditions are at higher risk of bone loss
– Eating disorders such as anorexia or bulimia
– Surgery of the stomach (gastrectomy) and weight-loss (bariatric surgery), hysterectomy
– Crohn’s disease, Celiac’s disease and Cushing disease

Certain medications
Long-term usage of certain medicines can cause bone loss
– Cortico-steroidal drugs
– Drugs used to inhibit breast cancer
– Anti-seizure medicines

Reproductive Health
– Pregnant and lactating women suffering from any of the above factors
– Irregular periods during the reproductive age
