Physical Therapy for Pain Management

Pain is the side effect or symptom of many illnesses and injuries. Physical therapy provides a conservative but helpful way of managing the pain. Not only can physical therapy provide relief for pain, but it can help in lessening or preventing future occurrences of the problem.

How physical therapy works

A physiotherapist will work with the consulting physicians to understand your ailment and will find the best possible treatment for you.

The treatment will usually include:-
• Medication to help bring down the severity of the pain
• Medication to bring down inflammation if there is any
• Resting the painful area for several days if necessary
• Electrical stimulation
• Heat and/or cold therapy
• Massage therapy
• Manual manipulation

After you have relief from the pain, the physiotherapist will start you on easy stretching exercises to relax stiff muscles and joints. Once the physiotherapist is satisfied with your progress, you will be put on strengthening exercises.

Physiotherapists may also recommend low impact aerobic exercises that will help like walking or swimming depending on the person’s pain and physical abilities.

Your cooperation is important

The onus is not only on the physiotherapist to make your pain go away. You have to do your bit which would include:-

• Doing your exercises regularly
• Keeping your appointments with the physiotherapist
• Following up with your physician
• Following the advice of the physiotherapist correctly

When is physical therapy advised?

Physical therapy is used to alleviate all types of chronic pain like:-

Osteoarthritis
• Neuropathic pain
• Fibromyalgia
• Rheumatoid arthritis
• Pediatric conditions
• Back pain
• Knee and leg pain

It is used to help recover from accidents and injuries like:-

• Fractures
Ligament and tendon tears
• Sprains and strains
• Sports injuries

It is also recommended after most surgeries to help in recovery. Physical therapy has advanced over the years and has become science in itself and offers conservative pain relief for chronic aches and pains.
