Common causes of Neonatal and Infant deaths in India

The percentage of neonatal and infant deaths in India is still high due to ignorance.

It is important to raise awareness about the issues that cause neonatal and infant deaths in our country.

Common causes include:-

Complications of preterm birth

  • Apnea – Lack of oxygen
  • Respiratory distress syndrome (breathing disorder)
  • Intraventricular hemorrhage (bleeding into the brain’s ventricular system)
  • Patent ductus arteriosus (a connecting blood vessel fails to close after birth)
  • Necrotizing enterocolitis (portion of the bowel dies)
  • Jaundice
  • Anaemia

Birth defects

  • Structural abnormalities like heart defects, spina bifida
  • Functional anomalies like disabilities
  • Congenital anomalies like hydrocephalus, Down’s syndrome, genetic disorders
  • Health problems related to above

Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS)

Sudden, unexplained death of an infant younger than 1 year of age

Pregnancy complications

  • Blood pressure
  • Preeclampsia
  • Gestational diabetes
  • Infections
  • Preterm labour
  • Miscarriage
  • Stillbirth

Neonatal encephalopathy

Problems with brain function after birth – Death occurs due to birth trauma or lack of oxygen to the baby during birth.

Infections and its symptoms

  • Blood infections
  • Sepsis
  • Pneumonia
  • Tetanus
  • Diarrhoea
  • Dehydration

Lower respiratory infections

  • Flu
  • Pneumonia
  • Bronchiolitis

Diarrheal diseases caused by:-

  • Viral infections
  • Bacterial infections
  • Parasitic infection
