What is Hair transplantation or Restoration?
Hair transplantation is a simple, outpatient procedure and a permanent solution that does not require continuous maintenance. Hair transplantation or restoration is a remedy for thinning hair, loss of hair and baldness disorders.
Hair transplantation involves the removal and replacement of hair follicles and hair, from the back of the scalp (where the growth is generally more thick) and to the region with high intensity of balding. A punch graft (a tube like instrument) or a scalpel is used to remove the follicle / hair and is transplanted into tiny slits or holes on the scalp. Generally, to achieve total coverage, several sessions required.
- Day procedure – Patient may check in and get back home on the same day
- Photographs of the areas of the scalp will be taken prior to procedure
- The areas to be treated will be marked with a surgical pen
- The donor areas will be prepared with surrounding hair being fastened with hair bands, to ensure that post removal the fastened hair will cover donor area
- Local anesthesia will be administered to the region from where the follicle / hair is to be removed
- A strip of tissue with the donor hair from either the back or side of the head is removed
- After removing the donor hair, the surgeon will suture the donor area and release the hair from the hair bands to cover the donor area
- After the donor hair is removed, it is prepared for transplantation, during which period the patient relaxs
- After the follicles are divided and ready for transplantation, local anesthesia is administered to the recipient area
- Tiny slits are made in the recipient area, with one slit for each follicular unit
- Care is taken to accurately gauge the angle, location and depth of placement of each follicular unit, so as to achieve a natural hairline and outcome
- Post-surgery instructions will be given on how to care for the recipient sites. Medication to ease discomfort will also be prescribed.
