53-year-old Parkinson’s disease patient regains normalcy through Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) surgery at Kauvery Hospital, Vadapalani

Chennai, 9th February, 2024: Kauvery Hospital, Vadapalani successfully performed Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) surgery for 53-year-old Parkinson’s disease patient who had been suffering for more than a decade.

The 53-year-old was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease and was experiencing severe motor fluctuations and brief on-time lasting only 30 minutes and underwent a Bilateral Subthalamic Nucleus Deep Brain Stimulation.  The procedure was done under MER (Micro Electrode Recording) guidance (Alpha Omega) and most advanced directional DBS electrodes were implanted in brain under the careful supervision of Dr. Vikash Agarwal, Senior Consultant – Neurology and Movement Disorder Specialist & DBS expert, Kauvery Hospital, Vadapalani with zero error.

“Parkinson’s Disease severely affected my mobility, creating tremors, rigidity, slow movement, and postural instability. Opting for DBS was a pivotal decision, and I’m grateful for the remarkable improvement it has brought into my life. My tremors and involuntary movements have significantly reduced, augmenting the effectiveness of my medications,” expressed the patient, reflecting on his journey to recovery.”

With increasing cases of Parkinson’s in India, this cutting-edge process is a crucial advancement in the treatment of the condition. The surgery is particularly beneficial for those who experience side effects from traditional medications or who encounter motor fluctuations, known as “on and off periods”, signalling that a ceiling dose with medications has been reached.

The team consisting of Dr. Vikash Agarwal, Senior Consultant – Neurology and Movement Disorder Specialist & DBS expert, Dr. Subha Subramanian, Consultant – Neurologist, and Dr. Vishwanathan, Neurosurgeon, spearheaded the multi-disciplinary team of 10 people that successfully executed the first DBS surgery at Kauvery Hospital, Vadapalani.

Dr. Vikash Agarwal, Senior Consultant – Neurology and Movement Disorder Specialist & DBS expert, Kauvery Hospital, Vadapalani said “The key to the process is a team approach involving neurologists, neurosurgeons, and psychiatrists. The surgery required not only technical precision but also a collaborative effort to ensure that the quality of life is restored to the maximum possible. Today’s successful surgery is a testament to the dedication of our skilled medical team and the strength of our patient who placed his faith in us.”
