Kauvery Hospital Alwarpet Successfully Treats Rare Case of Fat Embolism

Chennai, 19th July 2024 : Kauvery Hospital, Alwarpet, successfully treated  a rare and life-threatening case of fat embolism in a young man. The individual, aged 20,  suffered a severe leg injury while playing, leading to a fracture in the femoral bone.

The patient, who initially sought treatment at another hospital, became progressively breathless and confused, eventually suffering a cardiac arrest and falling into a coma. He required high levels of ventilator support and was in an extremely critical state upon his transfer to Kauvery Hospital Alwarpet.

Under the multi-disciplinary care at Kauvery Hospital Alwarpet, the patient underwent a comprehensive MRI scan, revealing fat embolism as the underlying cause. Fat embolism, a rare complication of long bone fractures, occurs when fat droplets from the bone marrow enter the bloodstream, obstructing blood flow to vital organs such as the lungs and brain.

Dr. Vetriselvan , Consultant Critical Care Medicine  at Kauvery Hospital Alwarpet  promptly identified the signs of fat embolism, including a distinctive rash on the patient’s chest. “The patient’s presentation was classic for fat embolism syndrome, which can be easily missed if not promptly recognized,” said Dr Vetri. “Upon arrival, the MRI scans confirmed our suspicion, showing blockages in the blood flow to the brain, and the characteristic rash on his chest provided further confirmation.”

Dr. Vetriselvan further elaborated on the treatment process, stating, “The patient received intensive care, with dedicated medical and nursing teams working around the clock. Our team’s coordinated efforts were crucial. Over the next three to four days, we monitored his neurological and respiratory functions closely. He gradually emerged from the coma, showing significant improvements in lung function, which allowed us to eventually discontinue ventilator support.”

Following his stabilization, the patient underwent surgery to fix the fractured bone, with all necessary precautions taken to prevent further fat embolism. Today, the young man is completely recovered and preparing to return home.

Speaking on the same, Dr Aravindan Selvaraj Co-Founder and Executive Director Kauvery Group of Hospitals says, “Fat embolism syndrome, though rare, is a severe complication that can occur following long bone fractures like those of the femur. This treatment of an individual who was in critical state, demonstrates Kauvery Hospital Alwarpet’s adherence to international clinical standards in critical care. The intensive care unit’s prompt intervention, ventilator support, and close monitoring protocols align with global best practices, ensuring comprehensive and expert care, and highlighting Kauvery Hospital’s commitment to delivering world-class treatment outcomes.
