Kauvery Hospital, Salem achieves successful Combined CEA (Carotid endarterectomy) -CABG procedure for Concomitant carotid artery stenosis and coronary artery disease

29th July 2024: Kauvery Hospital, Salem, which is part of a leading multi-specialty healthcare chain in Tamil Nadu, has always been at the forefront of medical treatment, technology and services.

Concomitant carotid artery stenosis and coronary artery disease is becoming quite common and is a clinical challenge as well. Very often patients undergoing CABG (10-15% of the patients) are found to have carotid stenosis, which is a block in the blood vessels leading up to the brain (carotid artery). In such a case, it seems appropriate to treat it by performing CEA (Carotid Endarterectomy) in conjunction with CABG (Coronary Artery Bypass Grating) procedure, to achieve any additional protection from perioperative stroke, rather than treatment by performing the procedures separately within a gap of 4-6 weeks. Combined CEA/CABG also offers the economic benefit of avoiding two separate procedures/hospitalizations and the advantage of patients being exposed to anaesthesia only once.

At present, this treatment is being offered in Salem only at Kauvery Hospital, and about 250 patients have undergone CABG over the last year and 6 of them under went combined CEA & CABG.

Speaking of this, Dr. Murugu Sundara Pandiyan, Senior Consultant – Cardio Thoracic Surgery says, “Recently we had a 77-year-old male admitted in our hospital with anterior wall myocardial infarction. An angiogram was done, which showed that he had triple vessel plaque and was advised bypass surgery (CABG). During screening before the surgery, he was found to have a block in the left carotid artery, almost 70-80% calcified plaque. Proceeding with cardiac bypass surgery without addressing the carotid artery problem, would have possibly caused a stroke which may have been fatal or resulted in disabilities, which might have rendered him dependant on others for the rest of his life. He was therefore advised the combined procedure, and is now doing well.”

Mr. V. Selvam Facility Director of Salem Kauvery hospital appreciated Dr. Murugu Sundara Pandiyan and his team for their commitment to patient health by deploying the latest treatment methods that offer better and long-term benefits, which establishes Kauvery Hospital Salem as a centre of medical excellence yet again.
