K-MISS (Kauvery – Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery)

The 1st live Kauvery – Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery (K-MISS) course was designed to increase the awareness among junior spine surgeons and post graduate doctors in Orthopedics and Neurosurgery to learn some of the techniques in minimally invasive spine surgeries. Ten faculty members from Chennai, Mumbai, Bangalore and Cochin who are experts in minimally invasive spine surgeries conducted the course. 5 live surgeries were performed during the course through interactive audio visual sessions. All the five patients are doing very well and have got discharged from the hospital today.

The intention of conducting such course is to improve the knowledge, indications, technique and complication management. Lectures and case discussions were also a part of the program. About 46 candidates from neurosurgery and orthopedic background attended the course.

Dr. G Balamurali, who is the Head of Spine Department and chairman of the course, feels that in Southern India, the number of surgeries performed by this technique is significantly lower when compared to other metros in the north. Such course will encourage patients to benefit through these techniques. Teaching and training is an integral part of societies and hospitals and at Kauvery Hospital, with the industry support we encourage training and education for those who are interested to learn these techniques. The course was supported and endorsed by the Minimally Invasive Spine Surgeons of India, Delhi (MISSI). We also have 10 CME credit points for this activity from the Dr MGR University, Chennai, which is the maximum granted for this type of activity. We also plan to start a minimally invasive spine surgery fellowship in the future.
