Non Surgical Treatment for Fibroid restores health in woman aged 48

Chennai, 7th November 2024: Kauvery Hospital Alwarpet has performed a uterine fibroid embolization (UFE) procedure on a 48-year-old woman suffering from severe, painful and prolonged menstrual bleeding. The procedure was led by Dr. Sathya Narayanan R,  Consultant in Diagnostic and Interventional Radiology, marking yet another achievement in offering innovative, minimally invasive treatments to patients seeking alternatives to major surgery.

The patient presented with symptoms of  painful and excessive menstrual bleeding that lasted up to 20 days per cycle. With a hemoglobin level of only 5 grams, she felt fatigued and experienced significant discomfort.  The gynecologist advised that removing the uterus (hysterectomy) would provide a permanent solution. However, due to her fear of surgery and a major operation, the patient sought a less invasive option.

After learning about uterine fibroid embolization from friends and online resources, the patient consulted Dr. Sathya Narayanan R, who explained the procedure, the benefits and expected outcome. Uterine fibroid embolization is a targeted angiographic approach that cuts off the blood supply to fibroids, causing them to shrink. By blocking the uterine arteries that supply oxygen and nutrients to the fibroids, their size gradually reduces, alleviating associated symptoms.

A pre-procedural MRI revealed an enlarged uterus with multiple fibroids of varying sizes. The patient was admitted to Kauvery Hospital for the embolization procedure under local anesthesia and a small tube was inserted into the groin area. An uterine artery angiogram was done to map the arteries supplying the fibroids in the uterus. Following this, small particles were injected through a microcatheter into the arteries eventually blocking it. The procedure was completed in less than an hour. The patient experienced mild abdominal discomfort after the procedure but was otherwise stable and discharged the following day. She was able to resume her normal activities three days after her discharge.

Three months after the procedure, the patient’s menstrual cycles returned to normal, lasting just three days per month. Her hemoglobin levels also improved significantly, rising from 5 grams to 11 grams without the need for iron supplements.

“Uterine fibroid embolization is a simple and highly effective alternative to hysterectomy for women suffering from painful and excessive bleeding due to fibroids or adenomyosis. For women who are not ready to undergo removal of the uterus—especially patients who may still wish to have children—this minimally invasive procedure offers a safe, scar-free, pain-free and anesthesia-free option. Women can resume their routine activities within three days, making it a faster and less disruptive treatment compared to traditional surgery.”stated Dr. Sathya Narayanan R, Consultant in Diagnostic and Interventional Radiology at Kauvery Hospital Alwarpet.

Dr. Aravindan Selvaraj, Co-founder and Executive Director of Kauvery Group of Hospitals added, “Fibroids can be a debilitating condition affecting the quality of life for many women. With innovations in medical procedures, it is now possible to treat fibroids through minimally invasive procedures thereby preserving the uterus, and aiding in faster recovery as compared to conventional surgery.  Kauvery Hospital has always been at the forefront of providing advanced medical care with personalized patient centric care.”
