Summers in India are pretty severe, apart from sweaty and greasy skin there are many other skin problems that are common during summer. It is not possible to completely avoid getting exposed to this climate, but we can prepare and learn about common skin conditions and how to handle them. The hot and humid climate can also invite various infections. In this article, we will discuss the common skin problems in summer and their remedies.
Acne Breakouts
While you can develop acne during any time of the year, it is more frequent in summer due to the increased temperatures, the sweat of the skin and bacteria mixing with oils from the skin and clogging the pores leading to breakouts. Those with oily skin tend to have more breakouts during this period.
The simple home remedy will be to use a salicylic acid-based cleanser, which will control the extra oil on the face and help clear acne. The other preventive measure is to use non-comedogenic products that will not clog the pores and will also help to reduce acne.
Heat Rash
Because of the hot and sticky climate, your skin tends to sweat a lot and because of this, the sweat gets blocked causing prickly heat or heat rash. This develops in the form of very small and scratchy bumps on the skin. The simple remedy will be to apply aloe vera gel on the bumps which will relieve itching and also have a calming effect on the skin. The general preventive measures will be to wear loose and breathable fabric during the summer months and also take frequent baths when possible.
Sun Burn
We all know that sun burn is common in this harsh climate. We have to protect our skin from harmful UV rays by applying a broad-spectrum sunscreen on the skin. In case of excessive sun exposure and sun burn, you can apply a mild hydrocortisone cream on the affected area. Also, using an aloe vera cream or lotion will give good relief from the itching and burning sensation on the skin.
Dry Skin
Despite the hot and sultry climate, your skin might suffer from dryness. In fact, this is a common skin problem, mainly because of exposing skin to pool water for long periods of time and also due to staying in air-conditioned areas for prolonged durations. A simple remedy is to use an odour-free moisturizing lotion regularly and a mild cleanser for baths. Avoid taking hot showers; instead, take a warm bath as it can prevent dryness of the skin.
Folliculitis
The skin aperture from which a hair grows is called a follicle. When the follicle gets infected, you develop folliculitis. While it is similar in appearance to a pimple, it is tender to touch and scratchy. A simple home remedy for this problem is to use an antibacterial lotion on the infected area. The preventive measure is to stay away from swimming pools, especially during the hot humid climate.
Body Odour
In summer, when sweat and moisture mix with bacteria, hydrogen sulfide and fatty acids are produced which result in body odour. The best remedy is to shower twice a day; also wear antifungal powder, especially in the folds.
Fungal Infections
Summer brings about a rise in fungal infections. Since fungi thrive in warm, moist environments, fungal infections can often develop in sweaty and damp areas of the body where there is limited airflow. The body areas most commonly affected are the armpits, the groin and the areas below the breast and waist. It can also occur in between fingers and toes. Precautions one should follow include maintaining personal hygiene, taking showers twice a day and wearing loose-fitting clothes. Also avoid using oil on the affected area and avoid itching and rubbing the area as it can get infected.
